When I heard Neon Trees were going to perform at CityWalk in Los Angeles, I knew I had to go. You’ve probably heard one of their singles on the radio, “Animal” or “1983” and
had it stuck in your head for days. But if you have not heard them live then you have not experienced Neon Trees.
They were playing a free show, so I arrived a couple hours early, not sure what to expect as far as the line situation. When I got there, a crowd had already formed and Neon Trees were on stage doing sound check. Everyone was excited to see them and the band looked happy to be there.
When they finally took the stage for their performance everyone went crazy. The band was ready to rock and the moment Tyler came on stage the party got started. I have seen some extremely energetic bands on stage, but this band goes beyond any other band I have seen live. In fact, if they do not feel the energy being reciprocated by the audience they will stop mid-song which Tyler demonstrated at this
very show. He compared the crowd to that of Hall & Oats fans and demanded that everyone turn it up a notch. He turned the crowd around and even gave a tutorial on clapping. They may be fairly new to the scene, but they are pros.
Their set list included: “Love and Affection”, “Girls and Boys in School”, “1983”, “In the Next Room”, “Your Surrender”, “Animal”, “Calling My Name”, “Never Tear Us Apart” (INXS Cover), and
“Sins of My Youth”, “Helpless” and “Farther Down”.
This was one of the best live shows I’ve been to. There was energy, craziness and great music. Neon Trees proved that even a free show and a small outdoor stage in the middle of a crowded shopping area can still provide for an amazing show because in the end it is all about the talent and Neon Trees are one talented band.
