Semi Precious Weapons:
Los Angeles After Party
By: Nevra Azerkan
The Semi Precious Weapons Los Angeles After Party took place at the Mondrian in West Hollywood on August 11, 2010. I did not attend their show earlier in the evening, but was looking forward to seeing what these guys were all about. If you have heard anything about them it is probably that they’re on tour with Lady Gaga and that the band, especially singer, Justin Tranter are some of the craziest, filthiest rock and rollers currently making the music circuit rounds.
I arrived at the venue approximately a half hour after 11pm and the guys were already there DJing to the small crowd that was lounging with drinks and watching a ping pong game. Most in attendance were industry players, friends of the band and friends of friends. However, I did spot Andy Hurley, the drummer of Fall Out Boy, who was there with a few friends and Jamie Foxx, who was busy playing ping pong with the Mondrian’s champion ping pong player. Apparently, Foxx is an avid ping pong player and even brought his own paddle.
It was a very L.A. scene gathering, so you didn’t see anyone flocking to Foxx or Hurley for a picture or autograph. Though, Hurley did seem like he expected someone to do just that by the way he was making eye contact with everyone. I’m fairly certain he went home disappointed. Most of the people were chatting among themselves and very few were actually dancing. In fact, the only people dancing were three girls who were undeniably the bands groupies. Upon viewing videos and pictures of previous SPW engagements, you can spot at least one, if not all of these girls.
At one point, which turned out to be the most scandalous moment of the night, Tranter took one of the girls onto the ping pong table to seductively dance and simulate sex to the point where the girl’s breasts were exposed. Once the song ended, Tranter went back to his DJ post and the party continued without anyone being utterly phased.
Some of the band members did mingle for a few moments, but mostly kept in their corner. The night ended at 2am with SPW taking a few pictures in a staged setting that was most likely for promotions of the Mondrian. Afterwards, they rushed into the elevator that took them up to their rooms.
I’ve heard what these guys are capable of and how other after parties went on and compared to those, the Los Angeles party was completely toned down.
